Can CBD help Childhood Seizures?

Seizures, while scary to witness and experience, are more common than you think. A seizure is an excessive discharge of neurons in the brain’s cerebral cortex. The term epilepsy is used to refer to a wide range of symptoms characterized by repeated seizures.

How do seizures work?

During a seizure, neurons fire all at once, causing a temporary disruption in the body. Depending on what part of the brain is affected, the type of seizure can vary, and show different symptoms such as an unusual sensation, muscle spasms, loss of consciousness, staring into space and more.

It’s difficult to identify seizures in newborns, because they can appear without notice. More than half a million children in the United States have been diagnosed with epilepsy, or have experienced a seizure. Children who have experienced two or more seizures are usually diagnosed with epilepsy.

Lennox Gastaut Syndrome

This form of epilepsy begins between the ages of 3 and 5. Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome can cause other types of seizures, such as myoclonic, atonic, tonic and tonic clonic.

Dravet Syndrome

This is a more aggressive form of epilepsy that typically develops during the first year of life. The Dravet Syndrome affects a child’s motor and language skill development.

Infantile Spasms

Infantile Spasms begin in the first year of life. They may also develop following a brain injury before the child is 6 months old. It causes muscle spasms, and learning and behavioral difficulties.

Childhood Absence Epilepsy

Childhood Absence Epilepsy often begins between the ages of 12 and 18, and can trigger 3 types of seizures: tonic clonic seizures, absence seizures and myoclonic seizures.

Benign Rolandic Epilepsy

Can develop between the ages of 3 and 10, and cause focal seizures at night. Seizures caused by Benign Rolandic Epilepsy go away completely by the age of 16.

Many studies have shown that Cannabidiol, CBD, is effective in reducing seizure activity, and even eliminating seizures with long term usage. CBD has no reported adverse reactions or significant side effects.

Regular use of the best quality CBD products can treat seizures effectively without creating the unwanted effect of THC. Children treated with CBD terpenes have seen more than a 70% reduction in their seizures, and 25% of them are almost seizure free.

CBD's Success with Seizures

Patients who have attempted other alternative therapies before trying CBD for curing epilepsy, have experienced great success and safety in the product. CBD has shown to be extremely effective for patients who experience seizures, as they report a reduction in their seizures, and some ceased entirely.

The American Epilepsy Society confirmed that CBD reduces the frequency of seizures, even larger cases like Lennox Gastaut and Dravet, where those with the condition found no relief in traditional medication. While researchers are continued to research the benefits of CBD’s abilities to reduce childhood seizures, we do know that seizure patients have reported an overwhelming amount of success with the product.

Products such as CBD gummies and CBD terpenes make it easier than ever to give your children medicine, with the fun, flavored options. They are widely favored by those treating their children’s seizures with CBD.
